Abstract
We have measured the salinity and the activities of short-lived radium isotopes (223Ra and224Ra) in streamwater, coastal porewater, and surface seawater around Yeoja Bay in the southern sea of Korea to estimate theresidence time of bay water. The porewater was characterized by low salinity and high activities of Ra isotopesrelative to the seawater around Yeoja Bay. The correlation between activities of Ra isotopes and salinity in seawaterreveal that the porewater is the major source of Ra isotopes for bay waters. Based on the224Ra/223Raratio model using the activities of short-lived Ra isotopes in porewater and outer seawater of bay, the meanresidence time of surface water (< 3 m depth) in Yeoja Bay estimated was about 6 days. This residence timealso reflects the staying time of land-origin materials moved from inner region of bay to open ocean. Ourresults suggest that it is necessary to consider the residence time of bay water calculated by using Ra isotopesfor estimating the allowable load of land-based pollutant in order to sustain the production of aquacultureorganisms and to maintain the water quality in Yeoja Bay.
